Norwood Cycling Club ready to tackle new Challenge

The well-established Norwood Cycling Club is looking forward to their debut at the 2017 Super Series.

A team filled with cycling lovers, Norwood have built their inaugural team on experience from a diverse age group of riders. One of the more experienced is Frank Smith, the former State Road Champ and National Road Series rider will line up as road captain and will be one to watch in the Men’s Category Two.

Joining Smith will be David Gomer, who is a multiple master’s medallist in both national and international events as well as Jason Tattersal. Tom Baxter offers the team a solid sprint option and lcoals might recognise him from his Clipsal Cycling Team days where he was a prolific winner.

As a club supported team, Norwood hopes to introduce and expose their members to fun off teams racing – without the pressures of the elite environment. Their main goal is participation and they hope they can represent their club proudly as well as grab a few results.

The Norwood Cycling Club has a proud tradition as the oldest cycling club in the Southern Hemisphere. The club was formed in 1883 by a group of penny farthing enthusiasts who enjoyed a mutual interest in cycling and racing. The club has grown from there going from strength to strength, and it maintains its proud traditions as the biggest club in the state.

They have experienced team manager Michael Slater behind them and previously he has managed National Road Series teams Veneziano/Blefari Cycling Team and the Swiss Wellness Cycling Team more recently.

“Oldest Team on the Block” not ready to act their age

The BE BMW team are ready for the 2017 Super Series and hope to go one better on their second place overall in the Masters Cat 1 division from 2016.

Boasting an enormous wealth of experience throughout their roster including World Master Games M5 Crit Champion Pat Marcucci and current Australian M5 Crit Champion Nick Steel, the team backed by Bicycle Express and Adelaide BMW expect a tight contest throughout the series.

Bicycle Express (BE) has two stores in Adelaide, one based in the CBD on Halifax St and one on the Parade in Norwood. Stocking a huge variety of brands and products, they cater for everyone. However, it will be their high-end offerings which will be on display in the series, with the best of Trek, Cannondale, Cervelo and others to be on the start line. Adelaide BMW is South Australia’s only BMW dealership and is based on West Terrace in the City.

Super Series 2016 runner-up Mike Davies will be a man to watch as he bids for the overall title and will be strongly supported by Jarrod Currie who has raced at the highest level of the National Road Series when not with the BE BMW team.

Team manager, George Vlahos who himself raced as a youngster, is looking forward to the Round 4 Wallaroo Road Race, part of the Cooper Coast cup. The two dirt sections are likely to split up the race as the race covers 77km of short, but tough racing. It’s a race everyone wants to win, and that’s what makes it so special and one of the targeted races for the BE BMW team.

The team also competes in the local SAMCA Crit series as well as other targeted events and are sure to make their mark on the 2017 Super Series.

Round one of the 2017 series kicks off with a Criterium around Victoria Park on Sunday October 1st.

Team List:
George Vlahos
Jarrod Currie
Cliff Grant
Michael Davies
Patrick Marcucci
Nicholas Steel
Nils Watermann

Christopher Jongewaard returns to the Cycling South Australia Super Series

Current National Cyclo-Cross Champion Christopher Jongewaard will line up for the Super Series in 2017. The multiple national title holder will head the JBlood Adventures team, which in 2017 blends a mix of youth and experience.

The team’s major sponsor is Jongewaard himself. JBlood Adventure’s offer customised coaching and programs with a focus on skills, techniques and tactics for MTB, Road and Cyclocross. With his formidable bike handling skill set, Jongewaard will be leading from the front in the criterium dominated series.

Joining Jongewaard on the team is Aaron Huysmans, also a seasoned racer. The Belgian born rider has a long involvement in the sport including racing at the highest level in Australia and Europe, and his tactical nouse will keep him in the mix. Huysmans and Jongewaard will be aiming to use their experience to help guide some of the younger riders in their team.

Another rider to watch from this team is Michael Demiank. Although a little inexperienced on the road, Demiank has spent considerable time racing on the track and will be looking to unleash his furious sprint on the Victoria Park finales.

Joining them on the road will be a few riders who come across from JBlood Adventures sister team, USG Cycling. They will have benefited from the experience they had racing the 2017 series and will be valuable assets for Jongewaard out on the road.
